King Janak of Mithila had a fair and beautiful daughter, who was the apple of his eye. She was no ordinary princess. Her life was an unusual start. One year, the kingdom of Mithila faced a terrible famine. Times were so bad that the king himself had to work in the fields. On such days, when King Janak was plowing a field, he found a girl wrapped in cloth in a furrow in the field. King Janak took this as a sign that the child was a gift from Mother Earth and named her Sita from the groove in which she was found.

Now, when Sita was of marriageable age, King Janak was determined that her hand would only be given in marriage to a man worthy of this precious jewel. He devised a test for future suitors. The king had a bow, very heavy and almost impossible to remove. He announced that his daughter, Sita's hand in marriage only to give the man the bow string.

Suitors came from far and wide to the fair princess' hand to win, but to no avail. It seemed that no suitor worthy of the beautiful princess Sita. It was during this time that Vishwamitra, Ram and Laxman came to the court of King Janak. Ram decided to challenge. The courtiers waited with bated breath, wondering if this just slip of a boy would be able to achieve what many brave warriors for him had not. Ram lifted the bow effortlessly. As he bent the bow to the string, the bow broke in two! The court echoed with cheers when courtiers praise showered on the young prince. King Janak said he would Sita's hand in marriage to give Ram, as he had more than exceeded expectations. The news was quickly transferred to King Dashratha. He was delighted and immediately to the wedding to attend Mithila. The wedding was celebrated with great pomp and festivities for several days and nights. Finally, King Janak was ready to say goodbye to his precious daughter and the newly married people went to Ayodhya.
